Dr. Levin's Phi Dental Grid, developed by PhiMatrix, is an authorized software implementation of Dr. Eddy Levin's copyrighted dental grids, which apply the principles of the golden proportion to dental aesthetics.
When you launch the Phi Dental Grid software, you will see the following:

The Phi Dental Grid overlays images displayed in any other program on your PC, allowing you to use your favorite photo viewer or editor to display your photos.
ACCESSING THE TOOLBOX
To access the toolbox, just hover the mouse over the Toolbox button in the upper right hand corner and the following panel will display:

TOOLBOX OPTIONS
Once the toolbox panel is displayed, the program offers the following features and options:
| Feature / Option | Default Value | Description |
| Flip Vertical Lines | Left | Flip the grid horizontally to align to left side of mouth or right side of mouth. |
| Borders | 50 pixels | Changes the dimensions of the border area between the dental grid and the program application window. |
| Screen Shot | BMP | Saves the underlying image and grid overlay to a file, providing options for BMP, JPG or GIF formats. While the JPG format is typically used for photos, the grid lines will be clearer if the analyzed photo is saved in BMP or GIF format. |
| Top Horizontal Grid Line | Off | Adds an upper horizontal golden proportion grid line. (Corresponds to bottom of the nose.) |
| Bottom Horizontal Grid Line | Off | Adds a lower horizontal golden proportion grid line. (Corresponds to upper line of the lip.) |
| Gridline Width | 1 pixel | Increases the width of the gridline to add emphasis. |
| Gridline Color | Yellow | Changes the gridline to the color of choice to provide better contrast over a variety of photos and images. |
| Window Width | 300 pixels | Changes the width of the dental grid application window. You can also click and drag the left or right side to do this quickly. |
| Window Height | 268 pixels | Changes the height of the dental grid application window. You can also click and drag the top or bottom sides to do this quickly. |
| Golden Rectangle | Off | Replaces the Phi Dental Grid with a simple golden rectangle, which can be displayed in landscape or portrait mode. |
| Opacity | 100% | Slider bar to adjust the opacity of the application from 1% (transparent) to 100% to fade the grid in or out. |
USING THE PROGRAM
This example assumes you are analyzing the right side of the mouth, or in other words, working on the left side of the photographic image.
Click and drag the program application at the title bar to align the bottom right corner of the grid with the bottom inside corner of the central tooth.
If desired, enable the top and bottom horizontal grid lines to identify the placement of the upper lip and nose.
Click and drag the top border of the application window so that the grid aligns with the upper line of the central tooth and, if applicable in your photo, the upper lip line and bottom of the tip of the nose.
Click and drag the left border of the application window so that the grid aligns with outside of the smile.
The program will show the most aesthetically pleasing dimensions of the central, lateral, canine and pre-molar teeth, as illustrated in the photo below.

Once the analysis of the image is complete, click on the Screen Shot button to save the image and grid overlay to file in either BMP, JPG or GIF format.
Most mouths are not symmetrical. To analyze both sides of the mouth, use the Screen Shot button to save an analyzed image of one side of the mouth. Next display that analyzed image, and set the Toolbox option to "Flip Verticals" to analyze the opposite side of the mouth, as shown in the photo below. Adjust the border size or change the grid color to get the desired effect.

HIDING AND DETACHING THE TOOLBOX
When the toolbox is hidden, hover the mouse over the word Toolbox to display the toolbox and its options. To hide the toolbox again, just move the mouse anywhere outside Toolbox.
At your option, you can set the toolbox to hidden or always showing. You can also detach or attach the toolbox from the PhiDental application and place it elsewhere on the PC desktop.
To hide / unhide the toolbox, click on the little pushpin icon in the upper right corner of the toolbox. When the pushpin icon is pointing left, the toolbox will automatically hide itself when not in use. When the pushpin icon is pointing down, the toolbox will always be displayed, either inside the application itself or outside the application on the desktop.

With the pushpin icon pointing down and the Toolbox always displayed, you can detach the toolbox from the application by double click the mouse on the golden ToolBox title area or click and drag it. The toolbox is then separated from the application and can be placed anywhere on the desktop.
When attached, and in always display mode (pushpin icon pointing down), the toolbox can be moved completely outside the application to the desktop. It can also be anchored to the top, bottom, left or right side of the application itself by clicking and dragging on the title bar of the Toolbox and then dragging it. While dragging the tool box, move the mouse pointer to the arrows shown to indicate the top, bottom, left or right side of the application window, as shown below, and then release the mouse to anchor the toolbox.
