Using PhiMatrix

When the application launches, you will see:

  • The resizable PhiMatrix grid overlaying whatever software you have open,
  • A status box showing the XY coordinates of the grid lines in pixels, and
  • A toolbox that controls all the software functions and options.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • The toolbox can be detached from the grid to make it easier to use, especially when working with smaller images.  Just click on the handle to the left of the snapshot icon and drag it to your PC's desktop.
  • To see a description of the function of any control, just hover your mouse pointer over it.

The easiest way to learn PhiMatrix is just to experiment with the controls.  Use the photos in the Image Gallery for practice.

The functions provided by the circles at the top of the tool bar are as follows:

Options

A Snapshot Capture the image you've created in JPEG or BITMAP format by selecting the image format from the file type drop down box.  (Note that you can also just press the PrintScreen button on your keyboard and then paste your image directly into your photo editing software.  This avoids changes to colors that may occur when saving in the compressed JPEG format.) jpg, jpeg, bmp
B Grid color Set the grid color to any of the standard colors or select the custom option to select from over 16 million RGB colors. 0-255 for RGB
C Grid line width Width of the grid lines in pixels. 1 pixel on up
D Grid line count vertical Number of vertical grid lines. (To enhance performance, use a smaller number of grid lines when clicking and dragging the grid to size it to your image and then add grid additional lines for your final analysis.) 1 to 12 lines
E Grid line count horizontal Number of horizontal grid lines. 1 to 12 lines
F Grid lock / unlock "Unlocked" lets you freely adjust the dimensions of the grid to any proportion.
"Lock height" freezes the height of the grid and allows only horizontal resizing.
"Lock width" freezes the height of the grid and allows only vertical resizing.
"Lock Phi landscape" locks the proportions of the width and height into a golden section in landscape orientation.
"Lock Phi portrait" locks the proportions of the width and height into a golden section in portrait orientation.
Note:  A "golden section" is a rectangle whose height and width are in a ratio of phi, or 1.618.
